NEWS2score

National Early Warning Score 2 for emergency medical services, emergency departments and pre-hospital handovers.

NEWS2score is an iOS app for iPhone and iPad that helps healthcare professionals capture and assess vital parameters in a structured way according to the established NEWS2 scheme. The goal is a traceable assessment of clinical deterioration – early and with clear thresholds, for example in the context of infection, suspected sepsis or general instability.

Use in emergency medical services and acute care

NEWS2score is aimed at healthcare professionals who want to document vital signs and classify them according to a standardised early warning system:

  • Emergency medical services, emergency physician and critical care transport teams
  • Emergency departments and interdisciplinary early care
  • Handovers between pre-hospital and hospital care with consistent score documentation
  • Teams using NEWS2 in internal sepsis or deterioration pathways

The app does not replace guideline-based diagnostics or therapy; it supports the systematic capture and transparent presentation of the calculated score.

Key features at a glance

NEWS2 with established parameter set

NEWS2score guides you through the relevant measurements of the National Early Warning Score 2, including respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and oxygen therapy, systolic blood pressure, pulse rate, level of consciousness and temperature – plus documented "new confusion" where required in the respective context.

Overall score and risk levels

Individual values are combined into the NEWS2 overall score and displayed clearly. This helps the team see how the current constellation relates to usual escalation and observation thresholds – without pre-empting the specific clinical decision.

Field-ready operation

The interface is designed for rapid entry under time pressure: clear fields, traceable point allocation and a compact results view suitable for documentation and handover.

Pre-hospital and sepsis context

Especially in the pre-hospital setting, early structured risk assessment can support communication with the receiving hospital – e.g. when infection or haemodynamic instability is suspected. NEWS2score provides a common language familiar to many institutions.

User concept

You capture available vital parameters step by step or jump directly to fields for which you have measurements. Missing values can be deliberately left open if your clinical process allows – the app shows transparently which entries contribute to the score.

After completing entry, the calculated NEWS2 score and its presentation are central; findings can be briefly aligned within the team and repeated at handover.

Safety and responsibility

NEWS2score is a support tool for healthcare professionals and does not replace clinical judgement or guideline-directed therapy.

  • All decisions on diagnostics, escalation and treatment remain with the treating clinician or team on site.
  • Thresholds and consequences from the score must always be aligned with local standards, guidelines and the patient's overall situation.

The app is intended for professional use and is not designed for self-assessment by patients without a healthcare professional.
